A vintage Holden Torana has been snapped up at auction for a record $260,000 in a bidding session that lasted less than five minutes.
‘It doesn’t matter what you pay for this car, Kev, next year it will be worth more’
The 1977 Torana SS A9X was sold unopposed to a single online bidder at Lloyds Auctioneers & Valuers auction of more than 40 classic cars last week on the Gold Coast.
As the mint-condition limited-edition two door hatchback cruised down the checked-flag carpet, cameras filmed the awaiting crowd of motor enthusiasts fall into awed silence.
“This is the one that everyone has been waiting for,” one of the commentators can be heard saying.
“It doesn’t get any better than that. People will be bidding all over Australia for this car.
“It doesn’t matter what you pay for this car, Kev, next year it will be worth more.”
With price expectations of close to $300,000 for the beast, all eyes were on the auctioneer as he opened the bids.
The auction was all but over after the first bid, with an unnamed online bidder offering $260,000.
Those in the Gold Coast crowd were left only to watch on as the offer for the Torana, with its original paint job and just 140,000 clicks on its dial, was too rich for their pockets.
